Mugham is a from of a rich and authentic art, created by Azerbaijanis throughout the throughout the flow of history, and which has lived through long centuries and joined eternity. Mugham is a genuine, mysterious and exquisite music and as the masters of Mugham confess, no singer has succeeded to thoroughly learn all of its secrets. In 2003, UNESCO has acknowledged the authenticity, richness and cultural significance of mugham both national and global culture, and in 2003 announced it as a “Masterpiece of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”.

Heydar Aliyev Foundation, since the day of its inception, has taken a moral responsibility to preserve, develop and promote the national values, including the art of Mugham, to pass to the future generations its richness and deep philosophy and has already accomplished significant results. The successful projects include a music album “Garabagh Singers Collection” compiling the works of 24 Mugham masters released under the priject “Azerbaijani Mughams”, an ongoing Mugham Evenings Program, which hosts well-known Mugham singers; Mugham TV Contests Program; Mugham Center, which is constructed on the seaside National Park in Baku; release of the first issue of the “Mugham” Magazine. Other projects include “Mugham-irs”, “Mugham-Anthology”, “The World of Mugham”, “Mugham Encyclopedia”, “Mugham-Internet” and “Mugham-Destgah”.

Mugham, lately, enjoys a significant public interest and support in the country. We are delightful to see that the world community, also, views Mugham as a centuries-old valuable cultural heritage. Given this, Heydar Aliyev Foundation launched the Mugham TV Contests Program in 2005 and 2007, which was broadcasted internationally. The project plays an invaluable role in identifying the young talents, transmitting the profundity and magnificence of the Art of Mugham to the world and increasing the number of Mugham lovers. The brochure provides a broad view over the projects implemented by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, to preserve, globally represent and increase understanding about Mugam.

Mugham, a substantial segment of the intangible heritage of Azerbaijan, is centuries old art of music. Mugham’s deep roots and special place in Azerbaijan’s culture comes from the fact that it is publicly accepted as an invaluable part of the cultural heritage.

Azerbaijani Mugam, in the beginning of the 21st century, lives through a period of renaissance, and the classical Mugham traditions are blossoming. Today, Azerbaijani Mugham can be hear at international festivals and the world-class performance venues. Azerbaijani Mugham and the masters of Azerbaijani Mugam are today world-widely acknowledged.

In 2003, UNESCO acknowledged the profundity and cultural significance of Mugham for the national and global culture and proclaimed Mugham as one of the “Masterpieces of Oral and Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity”. Thus the authenticity and global cultural significance of Mugham was endorsed.

Projects, such as, “Mugham-Irs”, “Mugham-Destgah”, “Mugham Encyclopedia”, “Mugham-Internet”, “Mugham-Anthology”, “The World of Mugham’, and “Mugham Center” are being successfully implemented under the supervision of Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, Presdent of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO and Member of Parliament. These projects are entirely dedicated to art and phenomena of Mugham and aim to contribute to a comprehensive study and promotion of Mugham, its preservation and communication to the future generations. Azerbaijani singers were pioneers in the Muslim East to present the delicacy of Mugham to the international audience during their performance tours to Europe. Their performances were preserved on gramophone records. In 1906, “Gramophone” British Joint-Stock Company recorded Azerbaijani music in the performance of famous singer Jabbar Garyagdioghlu and other renowned Azerbaijani singers for the first time. During 1906-1914, several European companies released muliple record of Azerbaijani Mugams, Tasnifs and Rangs for sale.

The İnternational Festivals of National Music organized by UNESCO in the Soviet Union in the 1970’s helped the Western community to “discover” the music traditions of the Soviet East, which also included Azerbaijani Mugham art as an priginal musical culture/ Siince then, Azerbaijani Mugham started entering the world cultural space. “The Azerbaijani Music” record, released under the series of “The Anthology of Eastern Music” in 1971 wasincluded in the UNESCO Collection of Traditional Music of the World, which contained 50 albums. In 1975, Azerbaijani Mughams were included in the “Music Sources” Series of UNESCO.

Heydar Aliyev Foundation, since the day of its inception, has taken a moral responsibility to preserve and develop Mugham, to pass to the future generations its richness and deep philosophy and to this end released an elegantly designed music album “Garabagh Singers Collection” under the priject “Azerbaijani Nughams’. The album contains Mughams in the performance of 24 Mugham masters. The music album, also aims to convery the sorrow of Garabagh land and Azerbaijan’s call for justice to the world community through Mugham. The presentation of “Garabagh Singers Collection” was held at the Annual Meeting of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors at the Headquarters of UNESCO in March, 2005.

The International Mugham Center,established in Baku, deserves a special attention among the projects that Heydar Aliyev Foundation implemented to preserve our cultural values and promote Azerbaijan’s culture. The foundation of the Center was laid in the presence of Ilham Aliyev,President of the Republic of Azerbijan and Koichiro Matsuura ,Director General of UNESCO,at the seaside National Park on August 24,2005. The Center will serve as a venue for international music festival, conferences, Mugham nights and as a focal point of all Mugham lovers.

The sturucture of tar,the key instrument of the Mugham musc,was taken as a basis in the architectural design of the International Mugham Centre. Two spherical constructions , one bigger the other, like in the shape of tar,make up the main buildings made of the Baku stone symbolize the traditions and history of the mugham music,the surroundig glass and metal express connection with modernity,the wooden parts represent the folklore.

Heydar Aliyev Foundation initiated a Mugham contest Program to preserve Mugham,an undeniable cultural heritage of our people,which played a crucial role in the formation of professional music tradition in Azerbaijan; to revive the traditional performance models; to identify young singers; to reinforce global promotion of the Mugham Art.The 2005 and 2007 Mugham contest of young performers turned to be a high point in Azerbaijan’s cultural life.

The Jury was composed of the influential Mugham experts,renowned Mugham masters,singers,scholars and music practitioners.

The total number of the Program applicants reached almost 550,coming from different regions of Azerbaijan,including Shamakhi,Shaki,Ganja,Sabirabad,Barda,Lankaran,Baku,Sumqayit cities… 160 applicants could pass the first audition and only 20 applicants acquired Jury’s permit to join the actual contest in the final audition.

The participants were required to perform the specifically designed compulsory plan,which mainly included folk music,classical tasnifs,percussion Mughams and Mugham Destgahs.

During the contest,all Azerbaijani Mughams – “Rast” , “Shur” , “Segah” , “Chahargah” ,etc; percussion Mughams – “Heyrati”, “Arazbari” , “Semayi-Shams” , “Shirvan’s Shikasta” ,”Garabagh’s Shikasta” ,Tasnifs;folk music –“Shushanin Daglari (The Mountains of Shusha) , “Azerbaijan Marali “ , “Garagila” , ”Sari Galin” (Yellow Bride) were performed.

According to the contest requirements,each sessions would feature the performance of Mughams based on the ghazals of either one of the renowned Azerbaijani poets,such as Fizuli,Seyid Azim Shirvani,Aliagha Vahid,Haji Mail,Shahriyar,Mir Mohsun Navvab,Khurshidbanu Natavan,Gasim bey Zakir.

“Mugham - 2007” contest lasted for more than three months (14 weeks) – October,November and December,and it was live broadcast on Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week for three hours from the Rashid Behbudov Song Theatre.The overall length of the live broadcast reached 300 hours during the entire contest.

The contest was broadcasted through 4 live satellites to Europe,Asia and North America.The contest was made available for view over Internet as well.Numerous letters and phone calls addressed to the Organizational Committee and TV station were received throughout the contest.Thus,the contest succeeded to demonstrate to the Mugham lovers all around the world the talanted youth of Azerbaijan and progress of Mugham art.

The performance of the partipicants was accompanied by tar player Sahib Pashazade,kamancha player Toghrul Asadullayev and perussionist Sultan Aliyev.

During three month long contest ,the participants seemed to lve a whole different life. Time-wise,three or four months period is not long,however the participants had eough time to demonstrate their talents and skills.Some participans were even sucessful eough to impress the renown masters to the point to stand up and applaud the prformance.On the other hand,this contest was not only singer’s contest,but also a school by masters for these young singer.

The contest once again verified that Azerbaijan enjoys the myriad of talanted youth.All they need is support to move forward.Doubtlessly,as time passes these young Mugham stars will become Mugham masters in the future.And thenks to the hard work of these Mugham singers and masters Azerbaijani Mugham will continue to live,fascinate people and contribute to the world culture.
